Wondering how to surprise your partner in Montreal this winter? We got your back! With so many romantic things to do in Montreal, you will have many options to create the perfect date.

This winter, forget about the cold temperature and create epic memories in the beautiful city of Montreal.

In this post, we recommend 10 fun date ideas and romantic things to do in Montreal in winter. Thank us later!

Ice skating

Ice skating is probably the most quintessential winter date idea, and is definitely at the top of the list of fun things to do in Montreal for couples! It’s the perfect opportunity to “break the ice” on a first date and show off your fun side to your new partner.

And even if you’re not the most proficient ice skater, it’s also an opportunity to get cozy with your new beau as you skate hand-in-hand to keep each other level!

There are many places to skate in Montreal, but the most romantic spot is undoubtedly at Beaver Lake on top of Mount Royal, looking over the city. Skating here is free if you bring your own skates, or you can rent some for just $9.  You could also check the skating rink in the Old City of Montreal. It costs about $8, but you will also have to pay for the skate rentals.

Food and wine at the McCord Museum

For some, the perfect date idea involves drinking wine with a nice meal. For others, the perfect date is visiting a museum. Well, why not combine the two at the McCord Museum’s annual Wine and Food event?

The next event takes place on February 10th, 2020, and would make for the perfect evening for any food, wine, or museum lover! The event is one day only and a little expensive (tickets starting at $200), so it may not be a date idea for new couples, but would make for the perfect anniversary or “just because” date for long-term couples.

Have a cat coffee date @ The Café Chat L’Heureux

If your partner is a cat-lover, you’ll struggle to find a better place to take them on a romantic date than a cat café! The Café Chat L’Heureux offers a nice warm area for you to sit and enjoy some food and drink amongst the cats, as well as a dedicated play area for you to lay down and interact one-on-one with the kitties.

If your partner loves cats, you can be sure they’re also going to love you after you take them here! The food at The Café Chat L’Heureux is very affordable, ranging between $5-15, and there’s no extra cost to enter this kitty den.

Montreal Festival of Lights

If you and your date are looking for something a little more energetic this winter, the Montreal Festival of Lights is certainly up there on the list of fun things to do in Montreal for couples. With a whole host of events including live music, exhibitions, fine dining, and art shows, the Festival of Lights will no doubt be a date to remember.

The next Festival takes place between February 20th to March 1st, 2020. It’s recommended that visitors snap up tickets and check hotel availability in advance, as the festival can attract around 800,000 visitors!

Take a walk in Mount Royal Park

An iconic part of Montreal, Mount Royal Park is a great spot to take a romantic (and free!) walk with your date. Mount Royal is also the perfect spot for skiing and snowshoeing, but if something a little more low-key is for you, there’s nothing better than a nice stroll through the snow with your partner, as both of you clutch some warming hot chocolate in your hands.

There are three cafe locations in Mount Royal Park serving hot drinks and food, so you’re never too far from a little pit-stop to regain your warmth and energy.

Je t’aime en chocolat (I love you in chocolate)

Translating to “I love you in chocolate”, Montreal’s annual chocolate festival Je t’aime en chocolat is the perfect date idea if your partner has a sweet tooth. The festival, aptly named for couples, is the perfect place to taste some sweet treats, take a chocolate cooking workshop, or even see a chocolate fashion show.

The next event begins in February 2020 and charges a small admission fee (we’re talking mere dollars).

Dog sledding at Parc Jean-Drapeau

What better way to experience the snowy winter landscape of Montreal than via traditional dog sledding? Great for animal lovers and nature lovers alike, the experience of being pulled through the snow by a pack of beautiful huskies is certainly one of the most unique date ideas in Montreal.

Dog sledding is available during the annual Fête des neiges de Montréal, which will take place every weekend between January 18th and February 9th, 2020. Admission is $16 per adult, and a reservation is required to participate in the dog sledding.

Grab a drink at a hidden speakeasy

For some, one of the most romantic things to do in Montreal involves getting out of the cold and warming yourself up with a good drink. Luckily, Montreal is full of hidden bars and speakeasies, which add an element of intrigue to an already romantic date idea.

Notoriously difficult to find, you’ll have to do a bit of research to find them. Not only will you be able to grab a drink with your date, but you’re sure to impress them with your knowledge of the city’s secrets! Check out Big in Japan, Clandestino or Milky Way Cocktail bar – which are amongst the most popular ones.

Christmas in the Park

If you and your date are looking to get in the Christmas mood, what better than a trip to a Christmas village to get the magic going? Christmas in the Park (or Noël Dans le Parc) returns each year to Place Émilie-Gamelin, the Compagnons-de-Saint-Laurent Park, and Lahaie Park to bring Christmas cheer, warmth, and the spirit of sharing to Montreal.

Free to visit, the Christmas village offers art events, shows, and market stalls to ensure that you and your date get a good dose of Christmas magic!

Bota Bota spa-on-the-water

If you and your partner want to get out of the cold for a little while, look no further than the Bota Bota spa-on-the-water! Bota Bota is a “floating spa”, located in a historic river ferry tethered to the shore.

A spa might not appear to be one of the most romantic things to do in Montreal, as spas are usually intended for just one person to relax by themselves. But the Bota Bota spa has a dedicated page for those visiting as a couple, to give you some ideas of what they can offer you for a particularly romantic trip!

While this may not be the place for a first date, their couples packages starting from $100 would create the perfect date for seasoned couples!
